Research Findings: Why Only 6% of People Achieve Their Goals

In 2023, I embarked on a journey to understand the dynamics of personal goal setting. The findings, now published in the Open Journal of Social Studies, are both startling and enlightening. A mere 6% of individuals truly achieve their personal aspirations. But what’s even more intriguing is the unique approach this small percentage uses to realize their objectives.

The Struggle Behind Change

Over many years of interacting with diverse groups globally, I’ve observed a recurring theme: the intense struggle people face when aspiring for a better life. Despite their genuine desire for improvement, many find themselves trapped in a cycle of stagnation.

This repetitive pattern doesn’t just prevent personal growth; it significantly impacts mental well-being, relationships, professional success, and overall happiness. This observation made me what to find the correlation between the desire for change and the actual execution of it.

The truth is, initiating change isn’t as complex as it seems. The real challenge lies in knowing the right approach.

A Deep Dive into the Data

Between early to mid-2023, I interviewed 999 U.S. residents, focusing on their New Year Resolutions. A significant 81.6% (815 individuals) confirmed setting at least one goal at the year’s onset, highlighting a widespread eagerness for self-improvement.

However, the real shocker was the rapid decline in commitment. By June, only 6.5% (53 individuals) remained dedicated to their resolutions. A staggering 32.2% lost their drive within the first month, and by February, an additional 63.5% had given up. This trend aligns with the University of Scranton’s findings, which indicate that while half of Americans set yearly resolutions, under half persist beyond six months.

Interestingly, the research also pinpointed a correlation between the type of goal and its success rate. Fitness-related objectives had the highest perseverance, with 9.6% (29 out of 274) of participants still on track by mid-year.
